This is a very common condition that affects adults. The term sciatica refers to a symptom rather than a condition. It refers to nerve pain and possible tingling from an irritated or compressed sciatic nerve, which is the largest nerve in the body.
Symtoms:
Generally speaking, it is one-sided pain that begins in the low back and refers into the hip and buttock, and can continue down the leg all the way to the foot and toes. The pain is most often described as burning or stabbing.
Causes:
Disc herniation
Degenerative disk disease
Spinal stenosis
Foraminal stenosis
Spondylolisthesis
Osteoarthritis
Injuries
Pregnancy
Tumors, cysts or other growths
Conus medullas syndrome
Cauda equina syndrome
A straight leg raise is the most common test to determine sciatic nerve irritation.
Guidance on postural adjustments and positioning in exercises are key. Do's and don'ts in daily activities, sitting and sleeping, and pain management options are also key.
If the Piriformis muscle is the irritant, massage works wonders to soften the tissue and allow the nerve to function properly.
Piriformis Syndrome is a condition where a tight Piriformis muscle deep in the buttock puts pressure on the sciatic nerve which passes directly beneath it, thereby irritating the nerve and causing buttock/hip pain. Tingling and numbness in the leg may also be present. It is not considered "True Sciatica" and is sometimes referred to as "Pseudo Sciatica".
It can be caused by an injury, like a strain. I most commonly see muscle imbalances in the gluteal muscles due to a pelvic misalignment or improper weight bearing. Long periods of sitting or driving with incorrect posture commonly contributes to sciatic irritation.
